FSS-WASTL: Interactive Knowledge Acquisition for a Semantic Lexicon
نویسندگان
چکیده
The following paper describes FSS-WASTL, a system for the acquisition of semantic knowledge within XTRA – a natural language access system to expert systems. Starting from user-supplied example utterances, hypotheses for lexical entries are induced, which then are refined top down through interactive classification. The refinement process of FSS-WASTL is a variant of the well-known KLONE classification procedure and is an extension of T. Finin’s interactive classifier. The integration of XTRA’s natural language generator, which is a highlight of FSS-WASTL, allows for the paraphrasing of the user’s input for clarification purposes. FSS-WASTL is compared with other research systems. It is argued that this approach can be transfered to applications beyond the natural language domain.

How to Encode Semantic Knowledge: A Method for Meaning Representation and Computer-Aided Acquisition
Natural language processing will not be able to compete with traditional information retrieval unless high-coverage techniques are developed. It is commonly agreed that a poor encoding of the semantic lexicon is the bottleneck of many existing systems. A hand encoding of semantic knowledge on an extensive basis is not realistic; hence, it is important to devise methods by which such knowledge c...
متن کاملAn X-Windows Toolkit for Knowledge Acquisition and Representation Based on Conceptual Structures
This paper describes GET (Graph Editor and Tools), a tool based on Sowa's conceptual structures, which can be used for generic knowledge acquisition and representation. The system enabled the acquisition of semantic information (restrictions) for a lexicon used by a semantic interpreter for Portuguese sentences featuring some deduction capabilities. GET also enables the graphical representation...
متن کاملInteractive Background Knowledge Acquisition for Inducing Differences among Documents
This paper presents a case study in which an Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) technique is applied to natural language processing. Aleph, an ILP system, is used to induce differences among documents. A Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) system is proposed for the purpose of compiling the background knowledge inputted into Aleph. In the CBR system, lexical and syntactic information concerning words in ...
متن کاملAutomatic Acquisition of Meaning Elements for the Creation of Semantic Lexicons
This paper presents, in a unified way, two new trends in natural language processing, that is a new kind of lexicons that are cornerstones of a lot of current natural language applications which tackle the problem of meaning, and different corpus-based lexical knowledge acquisition studies that have emerged with the big amounts of electronic texts available on the nets. More precisely, this pap...
متن کاملThe Subworld Concept Lexicon and the Lexicon Management System
Natural language processing systems require three different types of lexicons: the concept lexicon that describes the (sub)world ontology and the analysis and generation lexicons for natural languages. We argue that the acquisition of the concept lexicon must precede any lexical work on natural language and that a comprehensive lexicon management system (LMS) is necessary for lexicon acquisitio...
